Von der Leyen Sets to Raise €7.5B to Fight COVID-19 Pandemic
On Monday, the European Union, together with the World Health Organization (WHO), will host the global online response to coronavirus to raise funds for developing a vaccine and a cure for the new disease.
The international donor news conference was proposed on April 15 by the President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen. She said that the initiative was supported by WHO and some international organizations and countries. The goal of the marathon, which is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Brussels time, is to raise €7.5 billion for the speedy development of a vaccine and an effective medicine, which should then immediately become available to all countries of the world.
Von der Leyen called on organizations, companies and countries to actively donate to the global fight against COVID-19.
The EC emphasizes that WHO has repeatedly called for international efforts to be brought together as soon as possible to ensure universal access to tests at the current stage, as well as new treatment methods for coronavirus and vaccines in the future. According to Head of the European Commission, the fundraising on May 4 will be only the first stage of the joint international fight against coronavirus.
