US Calls On Europe To Stop Construction Of Nord Stream 2
The US Embassy in Berlin called on Germany and the EU to impose a moratorium on the construction of Nord Stream 2, a project aimed at « circumventing Ukraine and splitting Europe, » acting US Ambassador to Germany Robin Quinville told the Handelsblatt newspaper.
« Now is the time for Germany and the EU to impose a moratorium on the pipeline construction, » Quinville said.
According to the diplomat, such a decision would send a clear signal that Europe will no longer tolerate « Russia’s constant malicious behaviour ». Quinville added that Nord Stream 2 is « not just an economic project, » it is « a political tool » that aims to « circumvent Ukraine and divide Europe ».
A representative of the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency earlier reported that Nord Stream 2 AG, the operator of Nord Stream 2, would resume the laying of Nord Stream 2 on December 5 and is expected to use the vessel Akademik Cherskiy for this purpose.
Nord Stream 2 is to build two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is being actively opposed by the USA, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas to the EU, as well as Ukraine and a number of European countries.
The United States imposed sanctions against the pipeline in December 2019, which forced the Swiss Allseas to stop laying the pipeline. The Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the project is commercial and profitable for Europe.
