Summer Season in Greece Ends Ahead of Schedule

The summer season in hotels in Greece is ending ahead of schedule due to the massive cancellation of booked tours by foreigners. The industry’s income by the end of the year will be 80% lower, writes Ekathimerini. The flurry of cancellations is linked to the imposition of quarantine for vacationers returning in the Netherlands and the UK.

« However, the outcome of the season cannot be called completely tragic, since the foreign tourist flow in August surpassed the pessimistic forecasts of the beginning of the year, » the newspaper writes.

In August, foreign tourist flows to Greece fell 55% on an annualized basis, but tourism revenues totaled € 1.5 billion, which is equal to the cumulative revenues for the previous seven months of 2020.

According to forecasts, in September-December, the Greek tourism industry will earn about 600 million euros, and the annual income will be slightly more than 3.5 billion euros, which is 80% less than in 2019.

The largest number of tourists came to Greece in August from Great Britain (315,800 people), followed by Germany (205,900), Poland (81,800), Italy (70,500) and the Netherlands (52,300).

According to Fraport Greece, the operator of 14 regional airports, passenger traffic in January-August amounted to only 5.53 million people, which is almost 4 times less than in the same period last year (21.7 million).
