Moldovan Authorities Set To Reach Agreement On Starting Accession Talks With EU In 2023

By the end of 2023, the Moldovan government wants to reach an agreement on the nation’s EU membership, said Igor Grosu, the speaker of the Moldovan parliament.

« We want the Commission to urge the European Council to begin talks with Moldova about joining the Union. » Mr. Grosu also noted at a gathering of EU parliament speakers that reaching a consensus to begin discussions by the end of 2023 was a top priority.

He pointed out that the administration wishes to get acknowledgment for the advancements made by Moldova in the process of bringing its legislation up to par with EU norms.

The application for Moldova to join the EU was signed by Maia Sandu, President of Moldova, in March 2022. At a summit in June, EU leaders agreed to give the nation candidate status for membership in the union. Before Moldova joins the EU, it has to meet nine requirements outlined by the European Commission.
