Macron: We Are Closing Schengen Area
Entrance to the Schengen area will be closed starting from March 17, Macron said in a televised address. Earlier, the European Commission proposed to introduce restrictions to combat the spread of coronavirus.
Entrance to the Schengen area will be closed starting from Tuesday, March 17, French President Emmanuel Macron said in a televised address to the nation. He noted that the decision was made jointly with other EU members, reports Reuters.
Earlier on Monday, European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen in a video message suggested closing entry into the EU for 30 days in order to combat the spread of coronavirus. She noted that the restrictions could be extended if necessary.
According to the Financial Times, the head of the European Commission discussed her proposal in a telephone conversation with Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and European Council President Charles Michel. Sources of the publication, aware of the content of the conversation, said that Macron opposed the closure of borders by individual EU countries and called for a single EU response.
