Italy Launches An Investigation Into Ryanair, Wizz Air And EasyJet
The inquiry into potential cooperation between airlines, including Ryanair, Wizz Air, and easyJet, over the cost of flights to and from Sicily was announced by Italy’s antitrust regulator on Tuesday.
The probe is the result of a complaint made by consumer organization Codacons, according to the regulator’s weekly bulletin. Another document alleges that airlines engaged in « particular coordination » to increase costs for domestic flights to and from Sicily around Christmas.
The agency stated that the complaint is also aimed at state-owned ITA Airways, which replaced the erstwhile flag carrier Alitalia.
Flight fares are a contentious topic in Sicily as many Sicilians who live and work in northern or central Italy typically wish to return to the island to celebrate Christmas with family and friends.
By December 31, 2023, the inquiry will be over according to the antitrust authority.
