Germany Sets To Ban Chinese 5G Technology Components

Although a number of operators already use parts from Chinese companies, Germany intends to forbid the use of technology from Huawei and ZTE in the expansion of wireless coverage in the 5G standard, Handelsblatt writes.

According to sources, « the federal government intends to significantly reduce the use of Chinese technology in Germany’s mobile networks, » the newspaper reports.

According to Handelsblatt, the ban may severely impact vital infrastructure of Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefónica, which have already used Huawei and ZTE components in the expansion of 5G networks. In this situation, the operators will have to bear the costs of dismantling.

The newspaper notes that Berlin’s goal « is likely to have severe repercussions » for its relations with Beijing as well as for the plans of German operators to advance the 5G mobile communications standard.
