Germany Calls On EC To Tighten Control Over Twitter
The European Commission should increase its oversight of Twitter following billionaire Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, according to Sven Giegold, state secretary in Germany’s economy and climate protection ministry.
Following Musk’s purchase of Twitter, some US journalists’ accounts were suspended. Musk later announced plans to prohibit users from promoting their Twitter pages on other social media platforms.
« General terms and conditions that change almost hourly, » Giegold wrote in an appeal to European Commission Vice President Margrethe Vestager and European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton. Giegold distributed the document via Twitter.
As Secretary of State in charge of competition policy at the German Ministry, Giegold demands that Twitter be classified as a company with significant market power, subject to a number of rules and special requirements, such as a prohibition on impeding competition.
