German President Asks Merkel To Continue Running As Chancellor
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has asked Angela Merkel, whose mandate as Chancellor expires this year, to continue running things until a successor is appointed. The head of state’s press office issued a statement to this effect.
« The request in accordance with Article 69 (3) of the Basic Law is related to today’s opening of the constituent session of the 20th Bundestag, » the release reads.
The parliamentary elections in Germany took place on September 26, 2021. They will result in the formation of a new government for the first time in 16 years without Angela Merkel. Tripartite talks on forming a future government coalition started on 7 October.
Subsequently, three parties – the Social Democratic Party, the Greens and the Free Democratic Party of Germany – said they were ready to switch from exploratory talks on government formation to coalition talks. The main contender for chancellor is 63-year-old SPD candidate Olaf Scholz. According to SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil, a new chancellor is expected to be elected between December 6 and 12.
