France, Germany, The Netherlands Support Granting Ukraine EU Candidate Status
Ukraine and Moldova, according to French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, should be awarded candidate status to join the European Union right away (EU). Dutch Foreign Minister Wopke Hoekstra and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also endorsed this decision.
The ministers have arrived in Luxembourg, where the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council will convene today, June 20th. Mrs. Colonna stated that giving EU candidate status to Ukraine must be accompanied with a strategy for the country. She requested aid in the economic, political, humanitarian, and military spheres for the country. In addition, the minister stated that Paris will continue to deliver weaponry to Kiev.
The suggestions of the European Commission (EC) to award Ukraine and Moldova EU candidate status were balanced, according to the Dutch foreign minister.
On June 17, the European Commission suggested that Ukraine and Moldova be granted EU candidate status, but Georgia was refused. The final decision is expected to be agreed at the EU leaders’ conference on June 23-24.
