European countries come to the top in WEF Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019

Spain, France and Germany are the most attractive countries for tourists, say analysts at the World Economic Forum (WEF). Finland was the leader in terms of security, and the United States was named the most secure country.

WEF introduced the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2019 in which analysts evaluated countries around the world in terms of their attractiveness to tourists.

Here are the top 10 countries:

  1. Spain (third time in a row)
  2. France
  3. Germany
  4. Japan
  5. Great Britain
  6. USA
  7. Australia
  8. Italy
  9. Canada
  10. Switzerland

Every two years, the report’s authors compare 140 countries by 90 parameters, which were combined into 14 groups and four major areas. The first of these is a favorable environment (safety, health care and hygiene, as well as environment for business, etc.), the second is tourism policy and favorable conditions for it (among other things, the country’s openness and competitiveness in terms of vacation prices are assessed). Another two areas are infrastructure (with subsections aviation infrastructure, land and port infrastructure, tourist services) and natural and cultural resources.

The report’s authors indicate that the tourist flow to some countries has reached a critical point, after which a continued increase in the number of tourists would start destroying local physical, economic and sociocultural environment, as well as deteriorate impressions of tourists. Some cities, including Venice, Barcelona, Salzburg, have already discussed taking measures to limit the tourist flow.

“The growth of tourism brings great benefits to many economies, but for a sustainable future, this growth needs to be properly organized and regulated by both politicians and business,” said Christoph Wolff, Head of the WEF mobility division and one of the report’s authors.
