EU To Increase Research Spending By 6.3 Per Cent In 2022

According to Eurostat statistics office, research and development (R&D) expenditures in European Union countries increased by 6.3% to €352 billion in 2022.

The number has climbed by 48.5%. since 2012.

R&D spending as a percentage of GDP decreased from 2.27 percent to 2.22 percent in the previous year.

Businesses spent the most, making over 66% of the total expenditure (€233 billion), while the government spent 11% (€37 billion).

Belgium (3.44% of GDP), Sweden (3.4%), Austria (3.2%), and Germany (3.13%) had the greatest R&D intensity in 2022. According to Eurostat, the three countries with the lowest rates were Romania (0.46 percent of GDP), Malta (0.65 percent), and Latvia (0.75%).
