EU To Create Rapid Reaction Military Without US By 2025
By 2025, the EU plans to establish a combined military force of up to 5,000 troops to act in crisis circumstances. By March of next year, EU foreign and defense ministers want to have reached an agreement on a final text. The EU Strategic Compass is the name of the initiative.
Josep Borrell, the EU’s diplomatic head, told reporters that 60 cooperative EU military initiatives are in the works. 14 similar projects had previously been authorized. « To carry out the entire spectrum of military crisis management activities, we need more agility, dependability, and flexibility, » the draft says (quoted by Reuters).
Land, sea, and air forces would make up the EU quick response force, which would vary depending on the nature of the crisis. The fast response force is anticipated to function without the assistance of the United States.
The EU Strategic Compass initiative states, « We must be ready to respond promptly to immediate threats or a crisis scenario, such as a rescue and evacuation mission or a stabilization operation in a hostile environment. »
