EU Proposes New Format to Discuss Challenges from China with USA
The EU has proposed the United States to create a separate dialogue format for discussing China’s strategic challenges for Western countries. This was announced by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
“We proposed creating a separate dialogue format for discussing strategic challenges from China with the United States. It is very important for us to conduct a dialogue with the United States on the situation in China in order to protect our interests and our values,” Mr. Borrell said after a video conference of EU Foreign Ministers with the participation of US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo. The EU representative noted that the EU remains fully committed to the transatlantic partnership, despite some disagreements with the United States.
At the same time, Josep Borrell announced that the EU-China summit will be held in video format on June 22. It is planned to adopt a program of cooperation between the European Union and China until 2025. “It is not easy to find an agreement, we do not have it yet, but we continue negotiations with our Chinese partners, and we intend to continue the talks until the last minute,” he said.
Bilateral contacts between China and the EU resumed on June 9. Josep Borrell and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in a video conference format.
