EU And US Agree To Reduce Dependence On Fossil Fuels

The EU and the US will work together to end their dependence on fossil fuels, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson wrote on her Twitter page.

« It was a pleasure to start the second day of the (climate – ed.) COP26 conference with my American colleague, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. Current developments in global energy markets again highlight the need to end our dependence on fossil fuels. We will work together to make this happen, » she wrote.

The EU is facing strong increases in gas prices, which have resulted in a serious rise in the cost of electricity. The European Commission believes this is a good indicator that the EU needs to increase the use of energy from renewable sources, whose prices have not seen such spikes as the cost of gas. The EU as a whole needs to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, the EC head said.

The EU has previously pledged to become « climate neutral » by mid-century, which entails increasing the use of renewable energy sources and reducing the consumption of fossil fuels. Implementing this strategy, however, requires trillions of investments. The European Commission also wants part of the EU’s investment to recover from the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic to go into developing green energy.
