Court Remands MEP Kaili In Custody
According to the RTBF television channel, the court in Brussels has remanded former deputy MEP Eva Kaili, who is accused of corruption, in custody.
Lawyers for Ms. Kaili urged that she be released and referred to the circumstances of her imprisonment as « undignified. » The Court of Appeal will have 15 days to consider altering the restraint if the judgment is appealed once more.
On December 9, 2022, Ms. Kaili was taken into custody. She and a number of other officials are suspected of receiving a bribe from Qatar in exchange for enhancing the nation’s reputation in Europe prior to the World Cup. Dec. 13 saw her termination. She claims innocence. In the midst of the controversy, Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary, claimed that Europe had become a « corruption swamp. »
