Brussels Court Postpones Puigdemont Arrest Warrant Case Until December
Hearings on the extradition of Spanish justice to the former head of the Catalan administration, Carles Puigdemont will be held on December 16 in Brussels. The Belgian court granted the petition of the lawyers of the Catalan politician to postpone the hearing to a later date.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, for the time remaining before the hearing, the defense and the Spanish prosecutor’s office must provide written arguments to the court. Puigdemont promised to attend the meeting in December. « We will surrender into the hands of justice, independent and professional, » he said, indicating that he trusted the decision of the Belgian court.
In turn, the Spanish authorities have warned of the intention to take further measures if Belgium refuses to extradite Puigdemont once again.
In mid-October, the Supreme Court of Spain for the second time issued an international arrest warrant for Carles Puigdemont. The grounds for his arrest are charges of incitement to rebellion and embezzlement of state funds, the warrant indicates.
The first European arrest warrant for the leader of the Catalan separatists was issued in March 2018. A month after this, Puigdemont was detained in Germany. On July 12, 2018, the Higher Regional Court in Schleswig gave permission to extradite Puigdemont to Madrid, provided that he would be tried only for embezzlement of state funds. Spain did not agree to this condition, and the country’s Supreme Court withdrew the European arrest warrant for Puigdemont.
