Borrell Comes Up With Proposals To Restore Iran Nuclear Deal

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, prepared by Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, contains suggestions to revive the Iranian nuclear deal (JCPOA), reports The Financial Times.

After 15 months of intense negotiations in Vienna and discussions with deal participants and the US, according to Borrell, he was convinced that there were no more significant compromises that could be made. Borrell then reportedly presented an agreement outlining lifting of sanctions and additional steps that could help save the nuclear deal.

The diplomat stated that there is no other suitable and practicable alternative, and that « this text reflects the best potential settlement that I, as the coordinator of the discussions, think realistic. »

Borrell also urged: « It is time for swift political decisions to end the Vienna discussions on the basis of the text I have suggested and to return immediately to a fully applicable JCPOA, » citing the risk of a nuclear crisis and the possibility of furthering Iran’s isolation.
