Barcelona Mobile World Congress Canceled Due To Coronavirus
“For the sake of a safe and healthy atmosphere in Barcelona and the host country, GSMA today canceled MWC Barcelona 2020. Due to global concerns about the outbreak of coronavirus, travel concerns and other circumstances, the event is not possible,” the organization said.
Moreover, as follows from the statement, the exhibition was not just postponed to a later date, but was canceled completely, and the next event will be held only in 2021.
Over 20 companies have refused to participate in MWC in recent days, including Ericsson, Sony, LG, Umidigi, Nvidia, NTT Docomo, Gigaset, Amazon, McAfee, Vivo, ARCEP, Deutsche Telekom, STMicroelectronics, Nokia, Rakuten, AT&T, Orange and Vodafone.
The Spanish authorities urged companies to calm and asked not to panic. Currently, only two cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed in Spain: both men who are diagnosed with are foreigners (British and German); they were infected outside the country.
The world’s largest exhibition of the mobile industry Mobile World Congress annually takes place in Barcelona since 2006. In 2020, it was supposed to be held from February 24 to February 27. It was estimated that more than 100 thousand people would visit it.
