Austrian President Says Country’s Government Crisis Is Over
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen intends to swear in a new chancellor today, 11 October. He considers the crisis in the country’s government to be over following the resignation of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
« This government crisis is over. In the morning I will swear in a new chancellor and a new foreign minister. The work for our country can continue, » the president said.
The head of state thanked Mr. Kurz for his decision to step down as chancellor. In his opinion, the work of the government should be continued after the restoration of confidence. Alexander van der Bellen said that the new chancellor and vice-chancellor had assured « that there is a sound basis for stable government cooperation in the interests of the homeland ».
Chancellor Sebastian Kurz resigned on Saturday amid accusations of media bribery during the 2017 election campaign. The politician himself assures that he is innocent and that he was let down by unfortunate wording in a text message. Mr. Kurz has nominated the current Austrian foreign minister, Alexander Schallenberg, to succeed him.
